An Urgent Call to Authorities on Graduation Celebrations

By Abdullahi Lawal Bungudu

I wish to draw the urgent attention of the Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), the Ministry for Religious Affairs, and all school principals across the state, regarding the manner in which graduation ceremonies are now being conducted in our schools.

It has become increasingly alarming that these celebrations—particularly those involving our young children—are gradually drifting away from the ethical, cultural, and religious standards expected in our society. In many instances, the interactions between boys and girls during such events are inappropriate, and contradict the moral values and teachings of Islam.

This worrisome trend, if left unchecked, threatens to erode the moral foundation we strive to instill in our children through both formal education and religious upbringing. Graduation ceremonies should be moments of pride and reflection, not occasions for moral laxity and cultural compromise.

I therefore respectfully urge the relevant ministries, boards, and school authorities to urgently review and regulate the way these ceremonies are organized and conducted. There is a need to ensure that such events uphold the discipline, modesty, and moral uprightness that our educational and religious institutions stand for.

The time to act is now—before this trend spirals out of control, leading to consequences that we may all come to regret.
