In what appears to be another major political setback for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State, one of Governor Dauda Lawal’s prominent campaign financiers, Alhaji Bashir Adamu Imad, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with hundreds of his supporters.

Alhaji Imad, who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Imad Petroleum Nigeria Limited, announced his defection after meeting with the state APC leader and Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, in Abuja.

Speaking on his decision, Imad accused the PDP of lack of focus, poor leadership, and failure to fulfill campaign promises, which he said had led to growing dissatisfaction among party members and citizens in the state.

“I decided to join the APC because I believe it offers better leadership direction and unity of purpose. The PDP in Zamfara has failed to meet the expectations of the people,” he stated.

He added that he wanted to formalize his defection before Matawalle’s scheduled visit to Zamfara so he could be officially recognized as an APC member ahead of the minister’s arrival.

The petroleum entrepreneur, who also contested for governor under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2019, expressed confidence in the leadership of Dr. Matawalle and former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, saying they have succeeded in building “a formidable and united APC structure that inspires confidence for victory in 2027.”

Reacting to the development, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the APC leader in Zamfara State, welcomed the new entrant and described his decision as “a major political gain” for the party.

He noted that with the steady influx of political heavyweights into the APC, the party is “on course to reclaim its stolen mandate in 2027.”

Matawalle assured Alhaji Imad and his supporters of equal treatment, stressing that the APC remains a party for all progressives committed to the development of Zamfara State.

In a statement, the state APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, congratulated Imad and his followers for joining the party, adding that their decision reflects the growing strength and unity within the APC under the leadership of Matawalle and Yari
